For the final section of the tourism unit we need to understand exactly what is meant by ecotourism and have a strong understand of a case study where conservation and stewardship are forming a key part of tourism. The case study we are going to use is the the Gallapagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean.
Aim: To produce a case study on Eco Tourism in The Galapagos. You can do this is any way you wish. You may be happy to simply produce notes or you may want to make a poster or a mind map. The choice is yours. But you must cover the main points listed below.
1.Understand and be able to define the concept of eco-tourism.
2.Clearly explain who is managing ecotourism and what kind of activities are taking place.
3.Recognise the benefits of eco tourism to different groups e.g. local people, the local economy and the environment.
4.To know the location of the case study and the physical characteristics of the islands.
The trick is to make sure that your notes are concise and well directed. Don’t write lots and lots for the sake of it!
I recommend using the text book as a starting point. Here are some useful websites to help.
- Cool Geography gives a comprehensive overview of the issues and is aimed specifically at GCSE.
- Galapagos Islands Tousim page illustrates exactly the kind of activities that tourists can do.
- Innovation Diaries gives some good detail on the benefits of ecotourism.
